Update August 26: Summit!

Congratulations to Erik, Charles and Hans!

Description of ascents by Hans August 29th.

Message from Hans thanks to Darrel Lindgren August 15th

Erik Weihenmayer is climbing his eighth summit in late August 2008 with Charlie Mace and Hans Florine.

It is commonly known as the quest for "The Seven Summits." Why eight?

The seven continents are: North America, South America, Africa, Antarctica, Russia, Asia, and Austral/Asia. The last being a combination of Irian Jaya, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. The continent is submerged under water thus some consider Australia an "8th continent." Logistics often prohibit climbing Carstensz Pyramid in Papua New Guinea. Many who go on the quest for The Seven Summits will opt for ascending the highest point, Coziosco on Australia rather than Carstensz. Erik has already ascended Coziosco and the other six highest peaks. Erik has continued to monitor the political environment in Papa New Guinea over the past six years and it seems that it is now safe to go. We hope to climb the peak via the easiest route and then ascend via the tallest most difficult face putting up a first ascent in the process. We'll also want to make the fastest ascent of the peak.
